A 6 month extension has been granted for the changes to London emissions standards that were due to come in September 2020 due to covid. These changes will now take effect in February 2021.
The requirements are that machines operating on London will have to be at least IIIb and those operating in Canry Wharf, Central Activiteis Zone and Opportunity Areas will have to be stage IV. These new rules however apply to engines with a power rating between 37kw and 560kw. This normally means excavators larger than 5t, dumers 6t and larger, telehandler from 6m and most small equpiment for example compressors or generators will fall under this threshold.
However we are finding that even for engines below the 37kw cut off manufacturers are required to move to stage V engines, meaning we are seeing very signficant hikes in the price of some equipment, especially compressors and dumpers.
The requirement are due to be tightened once again in 2025 and 2030, before we move to zero emissions in 2040, but I feel this maybe sooner the way things are going. We are beginning to see a few more zero emissions machinery in the market, I think this will really pick up into 2023.
